Evergreen

Our signature program, Evergreen, is a mental health and psychosocial support-based curriculum which consists of twenty-six activities covering social and emotional learning skills (self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, responsible decision-making, and relationship skills); interconnectedness with the natural world; depression and anxiety prevention, and awe.

Seven of the activities focus on East African animal species (some of which are pictured above!), allowing students to learn not only a vocabulary with which to talk about difficult experiences and emotions, but also about local biodiversity and animal behavior. The animal-based activities were reviewed in-depth by prominent animal scientists to ensure their scientific accuracy. We partnered with Jane Goodall’s Roots&Shoots to pilot Evergreen in three afterschool clubs in Rwanda last year, and are now expanding to seven additional schools. A full description of Evergreen, including skills and activities, outcomes assessed, student and club leader comments, our incredible Evergreen family, and key results can be found at the Evergreen Rwanda site, linked below. In addition, a detailed data summary of the Evergreen pilot is available upon request.
